This specimen was lot 45443 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Bi-Metallic 2000 Pesos Pattern, 1991-Mo. Mexico City Mint. ANACS MS-65. A RARE Pattern in desirable Gem quality condition, with no noticeable marks or toning." This design was also struck in bronze (Pn250) and steel (Pn 251). As inflation crumbled the Mexican currency system in the eighties and nineties, the mint was called upon to strike ever higher denominations. Hundreds of patterns exist from this period, some genuine design studies, others mint sports struck for the amusement and profit of insiders. Mexico did not issue any bimetallic coins until the reform of 1992.
