The first specimen was lot 72907 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Bronze 1000 Pesos Pattern, 1991-Mo. Mexico City Mint. PCGS MS-67. Pattern in Bronze. Portrait of Atlan, the ancestral home of the Aztecs." The Atlan mentioned on the coin is a Mayan glyph, not a portrait. The pattern was to replace an aluminum bronze coin featuring Juana de Asbaje (KM 536). It was never adopted, but enough were smuggled out of the mint and into the hands of collectors that it is fairly common today.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: bronze.
