These specimens were issued by the Mexico City mint to honor the 500th anniversary of the refounding of Tenochtitlan as Mexico City. This example depicts the Aztec Temple of the Sun mirrored by the main cathedral which was built on top of it. The oblong patch on the obverse contains microengraving, an anticounterfeiting device.

Recorded mintage: 30,500,000 of KM 997 plus 30,500,000 of KM 996.

Specification: 15.95 g, bimetallic, aluminum-bronze outer ring with a copper-nickel center, 32 mm diameter.
