These specimens were issued by the Mexico City mint to honor the 500th anniversary of the refounding of Tenochtitlan as Mexico City. This example shows an Aztec version of the Mexican eagle perched on a cactus. The oblong patch on the obverse contains microengraving, an anticounterfeiting device. The twenty pesos was reduced from 15.95 g, 32 mm diameter to 12.67 g, 30 mm diameter, in 2019.

Recorded mintage: 30,500,000 of KM 997 plus 30,500,000 of KM 996.

Specification: 12.67 g, nickel brass center in an aluminum bronze ring, 30 mm diameter, interrupted reeded edge.
