This specimen was lot 21239 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $920. The catalog description[1] noted, "George VI Matte Proof Silver Threepence 1937, Matte PF62 NGC, slight surface disturbances but nearly as struck and "of highest rarity" in this Matte state." First appearance in our auctions!" This silver threepence struck 1937-44 concurrently with the brass threepences (KM 849). Threepences are still struck for the Maundy sets but use a different reverse than that shown here.
Recorded mintage: 8,148,000 plus 26,000 proofs plus a few matte proofs.
Specification: 1.41 g, 0.500 fine silver, 16 mm diameter.
