Goldberg sale 106, lot 2480
Sweden G106-2480r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2480 in Goldberg sale 106 (Los Angeles, September 2018), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "Sweden. Daler, 1718. Carl XII. Emergency coinage. Mercury. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown." This copper daler was struck in Sweden in the closing stages of the Great Northern War when Sweden was losing and the government bankrupt. This series (the SCWC lists ten types issued 1715-19) was supposed to be redeemed in silver after the peace. When this didn't happen, the government official responsible for their issue was executed. Mercury poses here to stir up alertness in a war-weary populace.

Recorded mintage: 600,000.

Specification: 4.5 g, copper.

Catalog reference: KM-361.
