The specimen shown is from a type struck in Rome for Italy 1982-2000. This type was one of the first bimetallic coins struck and is often found with the inner core loose and free to turn within the outer ring. This denomination proved popular and convenient for various silver commemoratives issued until the introduction of the euro in 2002 (see the "centennial" and "Dante" commemoratives).
Recorded mintage: 150,000,000 plus 9,500 proofs.
Specification: 6.8 g, "bronzital" (aluminum bronze) core with a "acmonital" (stainless steel) ring, 25.8 mm diameter.
