Paris Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS Genuine--Harshly Cleaned, EF Details Gold Shield. Although cleaned as described, this is a rare date of a tough type, the ''louis d'or au soleil''. From the Dr. Morgan Collection." This type was struck 1709-15 in some numbers but it is scarce today. It was the last louis of Louis XIV. Its initial face value was 16 ''livres'' 10 ''sols tournois'', later increased to 20 'livres''.

This specimen was lot 22476 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1715-A. Paris Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS Genuine--Harshly Cleaned, EF Details Gold Shield. Although cleaned as described, this is a rare date of a tough type, the louis d'or au soleil. From the Dr. Morgan Collection." This type was struck 1709-15 in some numbers but it is scarce today. It was the last louis of Louis XIV. Its initial face value was 16 livres 10 sols tournois, later increased to 20 'livres.

Specification: 8.15 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 7.98 g.
