Sincona sale 76, lot 1094

This specimen was lot 1094 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 8,500 CHF (about US$10,317 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE | Kingdom. Louis XIV. 1643-1715. 2 Louis d'or au soleil 1715 K, Bordeaux. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich-FDC. NGC Not encapsulated. Oberfläche stellenweise bearbeitet. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, double louis of the sunburst of 1715, Bordeaux mint. Very rare, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Altered surface.)"

This is the last type of double louis struck during the Sun King's life. The type was struck 1710-15 in limited numbers. This is a fairly common date for the type but all dates are scarce.

Recorded mintage: 17,802.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, 29-30 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers. This specimen is 16.27 g.
