Sincona sale 70, lot 3544

This specimen was lot 3544 in Sincona sale 70 (Zurich, May 2021), where it sold for 4,250 CHF (about US$5,641 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Solothurn | Stadt und Kanton. Doppelduplone 1798, Solothurn. Gekröntes Stadtwappen mit Girlanden. Rv. Stehender hl. Ursus mit Nimbus. In der Rechten Stab mit Kreuzfahne und umgehängtes Schwert. Im Abschnitt die Jahreszahl. Laubrand. Sehr seltener Jahrgang. Gutes vorzüglich. (Switzerland, canton of Solothurn, double duplone of 1798, Solothurn mint. Garlanded and crowned arms of the city; reverse: St. Ursus standing, with halo, holding a cross and a sword, date below with laurel wreath. Very rare date, Good extremely fine.)"

This type is listed for 1796-98 and is expensive. This denomination is also noted for Bern, Luzern and the Helvetian Republic. The canton also struck quarter, half and one duplone.
