Great Britain 1817 half crown rev H3029-30679.jpg

This specimen was lot 30679 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $881.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "George III Halfcrown 1817, Bull head, MS64 NGC. A beautiful coin that seems essentially superb to the cataloguer's eye. The portrait is bold, with light die-clashing showing around it, but lustrous beneath rich bluish gray and golden green iridescent toning. A simply splendid coin!" The type was struck 1816-17 and features the large bust of George III, by then subject to the regency of his son the Prince of Wales. It is the first half crown struck under the new coinage reform that, among other things, introduced the sovereign.

Recorded mintage: 8,093,000 (including KM 672).

Specification: 14.14 g, 0.925 fine silver, .420 troy oz.

Catalog reference: KM 667, S-3788.
