Chile 1908 5 centavos

This type was struck in Chile 1908-13 and 1919. Altho the five centavos or half décimo was issued extensively in the nineteenth century, inflation eroded its value, forcing the mint to shrink and debase the coin. The denomination was converted to copper-nickel in 1920, abandoning silver. Many overdates exist, suggesting that older dies from 1899-1904 were recycled.

Recorded mintage: 3,642,000 including 1908/1 and 1908/2 overdates.
