Sincona sale 79, lot 1059

This specimen was lot 1059 in Sincona sale 79 (Zurich, October 2022), where it sold for 10,500 CHF (about US$16,779 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, Henry VIII. 1509-1547. 1/2 George noble n. d. (1526-1529), Tower Mint. Second coinage. Mintmark rose and lis. Of the highest rarity. NGC AU Details. Damaged." In 1526, the regime was forced to raise the value of the angel from its traditional six shillings eight pence to seven shillings six pence. To fill the gap, the george noble was introduced at the angel's previous value and the half george noble, shown here, with a value of three shillings four pence. It was not a success and was never issued again. It is today very rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 40 grains or 2.57 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen is 2.23 g.

Catalog reference: Spink 2271, Schneider coll. 577 var, Fr-162.
