This specimen was lot 45625 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 8 Escudos, 1791-NR JJ. Nuevo Reino Mint. Charles IV. NGC EF Details--Cleaned. 'CAROL IV' variety. Three-year transitional issue with the bust of Charles III." This transitional type of 1789-91 is fairly common, It obtains only a slight premium over the eight escudos with the standard bust of Charles IV (Fr-51). Nuevo Reino and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period. Assayer JJ is recorded for 1774-1808.
