This silver 160 réis was minted at the Rio mint in 1824 and 1826. This coin would have traded for one-sixth of a Spanish American peso. Earlier types of this denomination are available but this issue of the early Empire is rare. The specimen was lot 20530 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010), where it sold for $2,530. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro I 160 Reis 1824R, VF, cleaned with noticeable flan flaws. The first-year of the extremely rare two-year type."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.48 g, 0.917 fine silver, .132 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 373, Russo 493.
