This specimen was lot 23949 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $22,080. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Republic. Dollar ND (1914), MS64 NGC, a most attractive coin with rich silvery gray patina and virtually pristine surfaces. An original example with immediate eye appeal. Struck to commemorate the founding of the Republic."

This commemorative honors Yuan Shih-kai, one of the leading generals of the new Republic of China, founded in a burst of idealism in 1912 by Sun Yat-sen. The idealism quickly dissipated as various warlords jockeyed for power. Yuan Shih-kai managed to get himself crowned emperor before he died in 1916. Numerous varieties exist of this type.
