Áureo y Calicó sale 346, lot 1438

This specimen was lot 1438 in Áureo y Calicó sale 346 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €160 (about US$211 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1885*1886. Alfonso XII. MSM. 5 pesetas. Pátina. Ex Áureo & Calicó 30/05/2012, nº 2955. Ex Colección Manuela Etcheverría. Escasa así. EBC-/EBC. (kingdom of Spain, Alfonso XII, five pesetas of 1886, toned, scarce in this condition, about extremely fine.)"

This design was struck 1882-87 in large fairly numbers and is fairly common in grades up to Very Fine; nice specimens are scarce and expensive. The actual date (1886) is shown in the tiny stars bracketing the date below the king's bust.

Recorded mintage: 1,951,258.

Specification: 25 g, 0.835 fine silver, this specimen 24,79 g.

Catalog reference: KM 688, Cayón-17517, Dav-341, AC. 61.
