Spain 1885-MS M 5 pesetas (87)
The first specimen shown was lot 435 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 850 € (about US$1,320 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Alfonso XII (1874-1885). 1885*1887. MSM. 5 pesetas. Insignificantes golpecitos en canto. Bellísima, fondos brillo espejo y relieves mate. Muy rara así. S/C. (Alfonso XII, 1874-85, five pesetas of 1887, Tiny nicks on the edge, very handsome, mirror fields and matte reliefs, uncirculated, very rare thus.)"
The ouster of the monarchy in 1868 failed to bring stability to Spain. A short-lived republic yielded to the rule of Amadeo I, a prince from Italy who, finding nobody willing to listen to his suggestions, abdicated in 1873 and returned to Italy. In 1874, Isabel's son Alfonso was invited to assume the crown and coins were issued in his name. In 1869, the peso was reduced to 25 grams and set equal to five pesetas with each peseta divisible into 100 centimos. This system would prevail until the coming of the euro. This design was struck 1882-87 in large fairly numbers and is fairly common in grades up to Very Fine; nice specimens are scarce and expensive. The actual date (1887) is shown in the tiny stars bracketing the date below the king's bust (see the fourth image).
