Áureo y Calicó sale 345, lot 764

This specimen was lot 764 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €1,850 (about US$2,442 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1885*1885. Alfonso XII. MSM. 25 pesetas. Mínimos golpecitos. Bella. Brillo original. Ex Áureo & Calicó 31/01/2013, nº 3540. Ex Colección Manuela Etcheverría. Muy rara. EBC. (kingdom of Spain, Alfonso XII, 1875-89, 25 pesetas of 1885. Minor nicks, handsome, mint luster, very rare, extremely fine.)"

This type, struck 1881-85, is common enough to sell as a bullion coin but the 1885 is a rather scarce date. After 1889, Spain struck twenty pesetas on the same module as French twenty francs d'or.

Specification: 8.064 g, 0.900 fine gold, .233 troy oz AGW, this specimen 8,01 g.
