Sincona sale 47, lot 1937

This specimen was lot 1937 in Sincona sale 47 (Zurich, May 2018), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,800 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LIECHTENSTEIN, Joseph Wenzel 1748-1772. 1/2 Taler 1758, Wien. Selten. Vorzüglich. (Germany, principality of Liechtenstein, Joseph Wenzel, 1748-72, half thaler of 1758, Vienna mint. Rare, Extremely fine.)"

This one-year type struck in Vienna for Liechtenstein is rare and expensive. It was accompanied by a thaler (Dav-1579) and a ducat (KM C3). The princes of Liechtenstein are not recorded as having visited their realm until after the Napoleonic Wars.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 13.98 g.

Catalog reference: KM-C1; Divo 63.
