This specimen was lot 31074 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $6,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain: Philip IV gold Cob 4 Escudos 1631 S-R MS63 NGC, Seville mint. A seemingly quite scarce date for a type that rarely displays the full year on-flan, with this being the first dated specimen we have been able to locate coming to auction for several decades; indeed, NGC has only certified a total of 4 dated examples, with none ranking finer than this piece. Even admitting the minor cracks in the planchet at 9 o'clock, the strike is sound and well-centered with a general paucity of serious friction detectable. From the WTR Collection." This type is listed for 1630-34, 1637, 1639-47 and 1655. All dates are rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 grams, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 13.51 g.
