Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 43414
SB0123-43414r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43414 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Penny, 1893. Pretoria Mint. PCGS EF-45 Brown." This coin was issued 1892-94 and 1898 by the Afrikaner republic before its conquest by the British. This is the key date after some very rare proofs of 1892. This example realized only half the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: 11,000.

Specification: 9.3 g, bronze, 29 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM-2.
