Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74559
SB1123-74559r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74559 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. 3 Pence, 1893. Pretoria Mint. NGC AU-55. A pleasing example, with limited signs of actual circulation and much bright luster left." South Africa, after a turbulent history between English and Dutch settlers and the native population, was constituted the Union of South Africa in 1910. This coin was issued 1892-97 by the Afrikaner republic before its conquest by the British. With the collapse of apartheid, collecting South African coins is now respectable again.

Recorded mintage: 135,000, a better date.

Specification: 1.41 g, 0.925 fine silver, .042 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-3.
