South Africa 1893 pond
This specimen was lot 25506 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $30,550. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold Pond 1893, MS65 NGC, a stunning example of this low mintage date (62,000) with full gleaming mint brilliance and virtually pristine surfaces. An incredible coin in all respects with instant eye appeal; we doubt that a finer piece exists." South Africa, after a turbulent history between English and Dutch settlers and the native population, was constituted the Union of South Africa in 1910. This coin was issued 1892-97 by the Afrikaner republic before its conquest by the British. With the collapse of apartheid, collecting South African coins is now respectable again.
Recorded mintage: 62,000.
Specification: 7.98 g, 0.917 fine gold, .235 troy oz AGW.
