South Africa 1894 penny
This specimen was lot 35022 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "South Africa: Republic Penny 1894 MS62 Red and Brown PCGS. Mottled bright and dark surfaces conceal considerable flashes of luster with a sky-blue glint." South Africa, after a turbulent history between English and Dutch settlers and the native population, was constituted the Union of South Africa in 1910. This coin was issued 1892-94 and 1898 by the Afrikaner republic before its conquest by the British. With the collapse of apartheid, collecting South African coins is now respectable again. This is a better date despite the substantial mintage.
Recorded mintage: 182,000.
Specification: bronze.
