Stack's Bowers 2019 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72764
S Africa SB1019-72764r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72764 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $110. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Penny, 1898. Republic. NGC MS-63 Red Brown. An enticing piece, this example offers a red-brown brilliance with some deeper hints on the obverse." South Africa, after a turbulent history between English and Dutch settlers and the native population, was constituted the Union of South Africa in 1910. This coin was issued 1892-94 and 1898 by the Afrikaner republic before its conquest by the British. With the collapse of apartheid, collecting South African coins is now respectable again.

Recorded mintage: 263,000, the most common date.

Specification: bronze.

Catalog reference: KM-2; Hern-Z4.
