Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 41308
SB0123-41308r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41308 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen, 1776-LCR. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS AU-58. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1735-80 and is common. It had a face value of one gulden, which was two-thirds thaler at the beginning of the eighteenth century but was slipping to only half a thaler at this time. Another 24 mariengroschen exists (KM 895) with a leaping stallion reverse.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-362; KM-870; Welter-2735.
