This specimen was lot 553 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 1,700 euro (about US$2,696 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1810. Zacatecas. 8 reales. Flores y castillos. Acuñación descuidada. Precioso color. Rarísima. (MBC/MBC-). (Eight reales of 1810, Zacatecas mint, flowers and castles. Carelessly struck, precious color, extremely rare, very fine.)"
Alarmed by the outbreak of the Mexican war of independence, local officials opened a mint in Zacatecas so that silver ore would not have to be transported over bandit infested mountain trails. This provisional type was struck 1810-11 and is rare in nice condition as most were poorly made.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 grams, .896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.
