This specimen was lot 23360 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. Florin, 1944. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. A difficult date to encounter in such an elevated, Near Gem status, this superlative piece offers steel gray surfaces enchanted through blistering brilliance. The sole finest certified in the PCGS census. From the Fenton Collection." This florin struck for George VI retained the kiwi reverse introduced with George V. This type was struck 1937-46 tho none were made 1938-39. In 1948, the obverse was revised from "GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR" to "KING GEORGE THE SIXTH." The denomination was terminated upon decimalization in 1965.
Recorded mintage: 140,000 plus proofs, a scarce date.
Specification: 11.31 g, 0.500 fine silver, 28.58 mm diameter.
