Colombia 1646-NR R 2 escudos

Sedwick sale 34, lot 50

This specimen was lot 50 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Bogota, Colombia, gold cob 2 escudos, 1646 (R), rare, NGC MS 61. Nearly full cross and full shield (slightly off-center) with flat area to one side (assayer to left and mintmark to right not visible as a result), bold 164 of date and weak final digit 6, which NGC calls 0 despite die evidence to the contrary (the existence of short diagonal lines above Flanders-Tirol, for example), faintly red-toned in crevices. To be fair, the 6's in this period have very short "tails" and do look like 0's!" This type was struck 1628-55 for Philip IV. Most survivors lack legible dates and therefore many dates are unlisted (including the 1646) altho the Santa Fé mint probably operated continuously during that period.
