Colombia 1647-NR R 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 51 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $6,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bogota, Colombia, gold cob 2 escudos, 1647 R, mintmark to right (unlisted), NGC AU 55. Choice luster for the assigned grade, with bold full 47 of date outside of nice full cross, nearly full shield (flat on left side) with bold full mintmark N.R to right (first example we have seen for this date, as all others have been N.R to left)." This type was struck 1628-55 for Philip IV. Most survivors lack legible dates and therefore many dates are unlisted (including the 1647) altho the Santa Fé mint probably operated continuously during that period.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 6.74 grams.
