This specimen was lot 73268 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 6 Mariengroschen, 1770-IAP. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS MS-62. Nearly-Choice and extremely appealing, this specimen yields a delightful burnished tone around the devices and an ample array of original brilliance emanating from the fields. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This denomination was one-sixth of a thaler or one quarter gulden. This type was struck 1735-80 and is common. Mintmaster IAP appears 1763-72. About this time, the convention thaler was adopted, which acknowledged that the gulden was now half a thaler instead of the former two-thirds.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
