Germany 1957-F mark

from the Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74720

This specimen was lot 74720 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. East Germany. Mark, 1957-F. Stuttgart Mint. NGC MS-66. NGC census: 2, none finer. Silky surfaces are enveloped by soft luster that is almost completely uninterrupted across both faces. A delightful, wholly argent piece, it is a good option for registry set collectors due to its status as tied for finest at NGC." This type was struck 1950, 1954-2001 in West Germany, not East Germany. It was issued for collector sets only after 1994. Most of the dates of the fifties have a considerable catalog value; we don't know how popular collecting these by date is outside of Germany.
