Germany 1957-D 2 mark

Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 55972

This specimen was lot 55972 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. East Germany. 2 Mark, 1957-D. Munich Mint. NGC PROOF-66." This is actually an issue of West Germany, not East Germany, which issued this type from Munich, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Hamburg 1957-71. This date is scarce only in comparison to the large issues of the late sixties, altho the proofs are rare. Physicist Max Planck is featured on the obverse.

Recorded mintage: 7,452,000 plus 350 proofs.

Specification: 7 g, copper-nickel, 26.75 mm diameter.
