This type, struck 1853-89, is the most common gold coin of the Empire. It is accompanied by gold 10000 réis (struck 1853-89) and 5,000 réis (struck 1854-59). In 1889, the emperor was overthrown by a conspiracy of slaveowners fearful of his advocacy of abolition. World public opinion forced the oligarchy to abolish slavery the next year anyway.
