This specimen was lot 20709 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $3,105. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IIII gold 8 Escudos 1795JF Popayán, MS61 PCGS, fully lustrous and quite appealing, a sharply struck coin with the look of a higher grade." The type was struck in Popayán in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1791-1808. Overdates abound, including a 1795/4. Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14505, KM 62.2.
