This specimen was of lot 23612 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IIII gold 8 Escudos 1794-JJ Nuevo Reino, toned XF-AU, very sharply struck, small test mark on the rim at the top." The type was struck in Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1791-1808. Nuevo Reino and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common. Assayer JJ is recorded for 1774-1808.
