Chile 1872 5 pesos

Eliasberg lot 1425

The first specimen shown was lot 1425 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $184. The catalog description^[1] noted, "1872 5 pesos. AU-58 (NGC). Types as above. Medium gold with warm highlights and semi-reflective fields. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type was struck without change in Santiago, Chile, 1867-73 and succeeded a very similar type (KM 130) that was struck 1854-67. Mintages are generally smaller than those of the larger ten pesos. The succeeding type was considerably smaller.

Recorded mintage: 23,000.

Specification: 7.63 g, 0.900 fine gold, .220 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 7.59 grams, 22.40 mm diameter.
