This specimen was lot 30592 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic Volcano Peso 1833 SANTIAGO-I AU55 NGC, Santiago mint. An issue scarce to find in high grades, this fabulous specimen boasts lightning-strikes of luster through a deep silver-gray patina, precisely struck details showing little wear and the fields showing no significant detracting marks. An unusually highly certified example, and one which is rarely encountered finer. A similar offering graded AU50 NGC in our auction 3057 September 2017 achieved $1,600 hammer." This "volcano peso," one of the most popular South American crowns, was struck 1817-34 in some numbers but the majority of survivors are dated 1817. Circulated specimens are available for a price but uncirculated pieces are rare. The volcano design also appears on silver half, one and two reales of 1833-34.

Recorded mintage: 88,000.

Specification: 27 g, 0.900 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 82.2.
