Chile 1832-I peso
This specimen was lot 26418 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $998.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic Peso 1832-I, XF Details - Cleaned, Plugged, once used as jewelry and since then skillfully plugged just right of 12 o'clock with dark gray color now present at the edges, a scarce and popular type despite its flaws." This "volcano peso," one of the most popular South American crowns, was struck 1817-34 in some numbers but the majority of survivors are dated 1817. Circulated specimens are available for a price but uncirculated pieces are rare. The volcano design also appears on silver half, one and two reales of 1833-34. The SCWC states that the 1826 is the key date.

Specification: 27 g, 0.900 fine silver.
