New Brunswick 1864 5 cents

Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 1040

This specimen was lot 1040 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description^[1] noted, "CANADA. New Brunswick. 5 Cents, 1864. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-62. "Large 6" variety. A beautiful example of a popular provincial type, this piece offers well endowed details and deep tone. Seldom seen in as nice condition as this example, only two pieces have been graded better by PCGS." In 1861, the province of New Brunswick retired its collection of semi-official tokens and introduced decimal coinage. A full range of denominations, from half cent to twenty cents, was issued 1861-64. This date is very scarce in choice condition.
