Gelderland 1759 duit

Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 24304

This specimen was lot 24304 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $120. The catalog description^[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Gelderland. Duit, 1759. PCGS MS-64 Brown Gold Shield. A delightful near-Gem, presenting a good deal of red brilliance in the protected areas." Duits were struck in copper in Gelderland throughout the eighteenth century until the destruction of the United Provinces in 1794. This particular type was struck in copper, silver and gold 1758-68. The copper ones circulated while the silver and gold specimens were souvenirs or presentation pieces.
