This specimen was lot 3140 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $12,650. The catalog description[1] noted,
"1760 MM 8 escudos. Mexico City mint. AU-53 (NGC). Tall thin draped bust of Carlos III to right, legends around, date below/crowned arms, garter around, legends, assayer, and mintmark around. Medium to deep gold with some bright orange toning. Much lustre remains in protected areas and on the reverse. A beautiful example of this elusive bust type, used exclusively in Mexico in 1760 and 1761. Appealing on every level. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
This type was struck 1760-61 only and is among the rarest types of eight escudos, exceeded only by the imaginary bust of 1747.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 26.99 grams, 36.00 mm diameter.
