Heritage sale 61259, lot 99175
H61259-99175r.jpg

This specimen was lot 99175 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1724-N MS62 NGC, Montpellier mint. Large palms variety. A coin whose eye appeal already easily exceeds its comparatively lofty grade, presently situated as one of only three awarded this peak status from NGC. Perhaps minimally exposed to saltwater, this piece nicely pairs a slightly matte luster with clearly brilliant backlight, creating a visual presence that seems to sharpen the reliefs of the devices. We have only handled one representative in comparable quality--part of our September 2009 Long Beach sale #3006 (lot 20824)--which achieved $2415 at that time. Certainly a connoisseur's coin through and through." The specimen shown is a louis d'or Mirliton, grandes palmes, struck at the Montpellier mint (mintmark "N") during the minority of king Louis XV. This type was struck 1723-25 only but from twenty-eight mints. It would be extremely rare but for a quantity recovered in 1965 from the wreck of Le Chameau, a French troopship discovered off the coast of Nova Scotia. This type superseded the louis d'or Mirliton, palmes courtes, struck 1723 only, and in turn was superseded by the louis d'or aux lunettes, struck 1726-40.

Recorded mintage: 253,108.

Specification: 6.52 g, .917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 799, Dr/2 № 538, KM 470.13, Gad-339 (R), Dup-1638, L4L-466 (R2).
