The first specimen was lot 30519 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nicholas II Proof 15 Kopecks 1909 СПБ-ЭБ PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS, St. Petersburg mint. Obv. Crowned double-headed Imperial eagle. Rev. Crowned date and value in wreath. A sparkling white Gem, with spectacular eye-appeal. None have been certified finer by either of the two main grading services." The fifteen kopeks, a quasi-decimal denomination as ten and twenty kopeks were also minted, was struck in large numbers until the collapse of the regime in 1917. This is a common date. The communists struck a similar coin in .500 silver until 1931.
Recorded mintage: 21,667,000 plus a few proofs.
Specification: 2.7 g, .500 fine silver, .043 troy oz ASW.
