Sincona sale 11, lot 980

This specimen was lot 980 in Sincona sale 11 (Zurich, May 2013), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$248 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen, Kurfürstentum, Albertiner Johann Georg I. 1615-1656. Taler 1631, Dresden. Hksp. Gutes sehr schön. (Electorate of Saxony, John George I (1615-56), thaler of 1631, Dresden mint. Mounted, good very fine.)"

Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This type was issued 1620-38. It is not rare but is less common than issues of the previous reign. A double thaler (Dav-7600) also exists.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.91 g.

Catalog reference: KM-132; Dav-7601; Clauss/Kahnt 158. Schnee 845.
