from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71510
SB621-71510r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71510 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 10 Pounds, 2001. Llantrisant Mint. NGC PROOF-70 Ultra Cameo. A pristine example of this one year type. Matte finish on the obverse with hard mirrored surfaces on the reverse." In 1987, emulating the krugerrand, the maple leaf, the American gold eagle and other bullion coins, the Royal Mint introduced the Britannia program. Gold one, half, quarter and tenth ounce pieces were coined and marketed. To boost sales, the reverses were changed annually. This type was accompanied by KM 1022 (₤50), KM 1021 (₤25) and KM 1023 (₤100). This design was used again in 2006.

Recorded mintage: 500 (1,100 + 1,557 proofs, per the SCWC).

Specification: 3.41 g, 0.917 fine gold, 16.5 mm diameter, 0.10 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: S-BN5; KM-1020.
