This specimen was lot 28210 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $1,725. The catalog description[1] noted, "Isabel II 8 Maravedis 1844 Segovia, MS66 BN NGC, a lovely coin with virtually pristine surfaces and traces of mint red in the legends. Certainly rare in this elite quality." The Spanish mints feature large issues of a variety of copper coins which did not circulate at all in the Spanish American colonies. In the predecimal system which obtained until 1847, 34 maravedis = one real of silver. The maravedi was worth 1/34 of a real; history does not record the reason for the odd division. This type was struck in Jubia, Segovia and Barcelona 1837-50 and was accompanied by copper one, two and four maravedis. The type is not scarce and this mint is the commonest of the three.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.
