The specimen shown is an ''demi-écu aux palmes'' ("half écu with palms") struck in Montpellier during the reign of Louis XIV of [[France]]. This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the ''demi-écu aux insignes.''  Droulers<sup>[2]</sup> prices this date as somewhat scarce, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than a [[France 1654-Y 1/2 ecu|''demi-écu à la mèche longue.'']] This specimen was lot 1807 in Jean Elsen sale 152 (Brussels, September 2022), where it sold for €200 (about US$242 including buyer's fees).
