This gold one escudo was minted in Bolivia in 1791-1808. The specimen was lot 20308 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010), where it sold for $460. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IIII gold Escudo 1796/3-PP, VF-XF, light adjustment marks on both sides, definitely an overdate which appears to be 6/3. A surprisingly scarce type; this is the first example we have offered in our sales, and is joined by the following two lots from the same collection." This type is very scarce as is most colonial gold from Bolivia. Some of the later dates have recorded mintages under a thousand.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, .875 fine gold, .095 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14055, KM 78.
